As a descendant of shinobi, Jirou Azuma has been learning ninja techniques his entire life. But in addition to that, he also has the ability to talk to animals. One day when he rescues a strange black cat named Ragou, he learns that the world is filled with spirits called mononoke that can take the form of both people and animals. However, their meeting is cut short when they are attacked by a hostile mononoke who is after Ragou's power.

Young teenage girl Roue lives a peaceful life with her “uncle“, a droid named Zett. She spends her days exploring the ruins of the old world, destroyed by World War III two hundred years ago. During one of those explorations, she finds a strange cylindrical droid who calls himself Chrome, who for some reason doesn’t have a “base program“, which determines a droid’s main purpose. Chrome may have to find that purpose himself in his new life with Roue and Zett…

After Roue accidentally activates Chrome without a base program—what is essentially a robot’s soul—she and Uncle Zett invite him into their makeshift family and encourage him to choose his own purpose. But when an insane machine attacks their home, will Chrome survive, much less find his purpose?
